Canes clinch playoff spot with double-OT win
McGinn's goal sends Carolina past Washington
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Brock McGinn scored 11:05 into the second overtime Friday night to give the Carolina Hurricanes a 3-2 victory over the Washington Capitals and clinch a playoff berth.
Hurricanes reach playoffs
With the victory, the Hurricanes clinched a playoff spot for the second straight season. It is the first time the Hurricanes have made the playoffs in consecutive seasons since 2008-09 and 2009-10.
McGinn's goal came on a rebound of a shot by Andrei Svechnikov. It was McGinn's first goal of the playoffs and his second goal in 12 career playoff games.
The Hurricanes also got goals from Sebastian Aho and Teuvo Teravainen. Alex Ovechkin and Evgeny Kuznetsov scored for the Capitals.
Petr Mrazek made 29 saves for the Hurricanes, while Ilya Samsonov made 36 saves for the Capitals.
The Hurricanes will open their playoff series at home on Tuesday night against the Boston Bruins.
