Scotland U21s held to goalless draw by Hungary
Ben Doak misses late penalty
Goalless stalemate in Budapest
Scotland Under-21s were held to a goalless draw by Hungary in their European Under-21 Championship 2025 Qualifying match in Budapest on Tuesday night.
The Scots had the better of the chances in the first half, with Nathan Patterson, Oliver Abildgaard and Mikey Johnston all going close. However, it was Hungary who came closest to breaking the deadlock in the second half, when Daniel Gazdag hit the post.
With just minutes remaining, Scotland were awarded a penalty when Doak was brought down by goalkeeper Kristopher Vida. However, the Liverpool forward saw his spot-kick superbly saved by Vida.
The result leaves Scotland in third place in Group C, with two points from their opening two matches. They will now face Italy in their next qualifier on Friday night.
Reflecting on the game, Scotland U21s head coach Scot Gemmill said: "I'm disappointed with the result, but I thought we played well. We created a number of chances, but we couldn't take them. We need to be more clinical in front of goal. Overall, I'm still confident that we can qualify for the tournament."
