Verstappen takes Canadian GP pole
Russell shines in wet qualifying to take ninth pole of 2024 season
Red Bull's Max Verstappen took pole position for the Canadian Grand Prix, the eighth round of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship, in a dramatic wet qualifying session on Saturday.
Verstappen set a time of 1:21.299 on the final lap of Q3 to beat Mercedes' George Russell by just 0.054 seconds. It was the Dutchman's second pole of the season and the 18th of his career.
Russell, who had been fastest in Q1 and Q2, will start alongside Verstappen on the front row. It is the Briton's ninth pole position of the season, a record for a Mercedes driver.
Ferrari's Carlos Sainz will start third, ahead of teammate Charles Leclerc in fourth. Sergio Perez, Verstappen's Red Bull teammate, will start fifth, while Fernando Alonso of Alpine will start sixth.
The Canadian Grand Prix is the ninth round of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship. Verstappen leads the drivers' standings with 150 points, ahead of Leclerc on 126 points and Russell on 111 points.
