On Thursday, Italian boxer Angela Carini abandoned her bout at the Paris Olympics after only 46 seconds, refusing to continue the fight against Algeria's Imane Khelif.
The match had been the subject of controversy, as Khelif is a transgender woman whose gender identity has been questioned by some.
A joint statement from the Paris 2024 Boxing Unit and the IOC condemned the "misleading information" spread about Khelif and reaffirmed her right to compete as a woman.
However, Khelif's victory in her first fight is unlikely to put an end to the debate, as many continue to question the fairness of transgender athletes competing in women's sports.
